I’ve got to say it: This book was published in the mid-80s, so almost all of the patterns contain the dreaded, boxy, ill-fitting armholes. However, as a remedy, this book serves as a LookBook, and armed with a good knitting techniques book, the armholes and the body can be re-designed and re-fitted. 2 great examples of books with a plethora of knitting techniques are: “Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book” and ‘Knitter’s Handbook” by Montse Stanley. These 2 should be in the libraries of all knitters.

The photography in this book is good in the following areas: the knitwear, the zeroing in on some of the lush yarn colors and patterns, and the staging.

The large, color photos are dispersed throughout the book as are the color ‘fashion sketches’, in a few areas.

Something that could have been added to this book is a ‘Skills-Level’ rating for every pattern. ‘Skills-Levels’ are related to techniques, so having the 2 books mentioned above can help knitters at all levels, especially those at the lower levels.

A techniques-related matter is that there is a very short, basic tech section located on pages 78-81. Also, on the inside of the back cover, there is a ruler marked in both centimeters and inches, to better serve knitters from all countries. This is a nice touch to include.

This 1984, soft-cover book has 80 pages, and thankfully, it contains black and white pre-seamed pattern graphics, to show the knitter how the pattern should look when the item is finished. This is especially important for knowing if there will be more fitted armholes, and if not, having to re-design the patterns to get that Classic fit.

The stitch techniques in this book are included inside of specific patterns, and not in one large section (although, as mentioned earlier, the book contains a few tech pages placed at the end of the book). I suggest creating 1 larger section containing all of the stitch techniques required to make every one of these patterns. For now, though, the 2 knitting books mentioned earlier, would be 2 great adjuncts for every knitter who wants to knit any of these patterns.

The publisher is Japan Publications, Tokyo.

People who knit need to have all of the tools at their disposal when they want to make an item from a book. The book that they use, however, should provide them with these tools. This book included some of them.

I was looking for knitting projects for mohair yarns and came across this book. I'm already a fan of lots of Japanese knitting publications (ones in english can be hard to find), so I perked up when I saw that Nihon Vogue was the publisher.

While the models definitely have that 80s look to them, most of the sweaters don't. In fact, the author was very good about commenting on the shapes of the sweaters and what features they were meant to accent. The lines and colors have a very classic look. There are 32 patterns to choose from, which is the kind of selection that I had been looking for (I wanted to knit a mohair sweater, but couldn't find a pattern that I liked in any of my existing books). After looking at this book, I wanted to knit most of the sweaters in it.

On the downside, the patterns list the recommended type of yarn, but not the quantity, which is a bit annoying. Along those lines, the instructions are sometimes sparse. The diagrams are clear, but small and black and white.
